We can empower individuals worldwide impacted by Telomere Biology Disorders
Join me and help make a difference, please give today.
The premature deaths of my sister, Lisa, and my dad, Dean, from pulmonary complications associated with Telomere Biology Disorders (TBD) have been painful for myself and my family. Telomere Biology Disorders have impacted cousins and other members of the Helms family. Too little is known about these rare but devastating disorders.
I first became aware of Team Telomere through my sister Lisa’s involvement with the organization. She was an early board member and traveled on behalf of the organization to medical conferences to share the organization’s clinical guidelines with physicians who diagnose and treat patients with these disorders.I continue to honor Lisa’s work through fundraising and other involvement with Team Telomere. This year I had the privilege of attending Team Telomere’s Community Summit. I met patients and families impacted by TBDs and despite their diagnosis, I felt hope and community. At the same meeting, Team Telomere sponsored a Scientific Summit where researchers and clinicians met to share their research and work towards improving treatment and finding a cure for individuals with TBDs. Team Telomere supports this work through research grants, education and advocacy.
Team Telomere is celebrating their 15th year and I am fundraising on this Giving Tuesday to continue their work and their vision of a world where every person impacted by Telomere Biology Disorders has accessible care, community, and resources, with the goal of positively changing the course of this disease, driving toward improved treatments and ultimately one day a cure. Donations to Team Telomere are used to:
- Support patients and families with care packages, and clinical guidelines that they can share with their healthcare teams. Team Telomere supports patients by also connecting them with providers with experience treating TBD
- Fund clinical research through grants to further knowledge on how to better diagnose and treat patients
- Advocate for additional research and funding for this research on TBDs
- Educate clinicians and the TBD community on research and new treatments.
Please consider a donation to Team Telomere. My wish is that there will be a future with effective treatments and a cure for people like my sister and dad and Team Telomere is working towards this goal.
With thanks and hope, Michelle
