What is the Million Dollar Bike Ride (MDBR)?

Team Telomere’s MDBR Team started as Team Josh’s DCO Riders 2015, in honor of Joshua Friedman. Josh passed away in 2011 from Dyskeratosis Congenita (DC), a telomere biology disorder. Josh lived a full and beautiful life and touched many people throughout. Josh’s lasting legacy is a gift to our community as his story has helped raise over $520,000 in research.

We have partnered with Penn’s Orphan Disease Center since 2014 to excel our ability to fund quality science for Telomere Biology Disorders. Our goal this year is to raise $40,000 that will be matched dollar for dollar by the Orphan Disease Center.

My Journey with Dyskeratosis Congenita, Team Telomere, and Biking

Hello, my name is Gerald Wysoczynski Jr., and I want to share a bit about my journey and why I'm raising funds for Team Telomere.

Shortly after I was diagnosed with Dyskeratosis Congenita, a rare and often challenging condition, at 31 years old, I felt lost and overwhelmed. The uncertainty of living with a disease that few understand and even fewer know how to treat was daunting. But then, I discovered Team Telomere, and everything changed.

Team Telomere has been a beacon of hope for me. Through their network, I found a community of people who understand exactly what I'm going through. They connected me with medical experts who provided me with invaluable advice and cutting-edge treatments that have significantly improved my quality of life.

The educational resources offered by Team Telomere have empowered me to better understand my condition and take charge of my health. Their advocacy work is paving the way for improved treatments and potential cures, not just for me, but for everyone affected by Dyskeratosis Congenita.

Beyond education and advocacy, Team Telomere ensured I had access to the best possible medical care without the constant worry of overwhelming costs. This support has allowed me to live my life to the fullest, pursuing my dreams and embracing each day with hope and optimism.

I am truly grateful to Team Telomere for their unwavering support and dedication to improving the lives of those with Dyskeratosis Congenita. They have given me the strength to face my challenges head-on and the tools to manage my condition effectively. Most importantly, Team Telomere allowed me the ability to bike again. Ever since I was young, riding bikes was always one of my favorite hobbies. After receiving a life-saving bone marrow transplant and regaining sufficient platelets, I was again able to bike again.

I invite you to join me in supporting Team Telomere. Your contributions will help them continue their vital work, providing education, advocacy, and support to many more individuals like me. Together, we can make a difference and move closer to a world where Dyskeratosis Congenita is fully understood and effectively treated.

Every donation, no matter how small, brings us one step closer to a brighter future.

Thank you for your support.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Gerald Wysoczynski Jr,
